An oral irrigating device can be useful in cleaning out areas of the mouth that are hard to reach with a toothbrush or floss. The device delivers a stream of water to those difficult-to-reach places. The stream of the water is also considered beneficial to stimulate blood circulation in the gums.
Irrigators can be very helpful in for those who wear braces, the flushing out all the nooks and crannies around the bands. Likewise, for older people, the stream allows for a thorough flushing of food debris from around bridges and any other restorative fittings.
Oral irrigators are not intended to be a substitute for regular brushing and flossing, only as a valuable supplement. The stream of water, for instance, will not remove plaque. Talk with your dentist about whether you would benefit from using an oral irrigating device.
