Usually the result of an infection brought on by tooth decay, a gumboil is a pus-filled, painful swelling on the gum. The infection, also called an abscess, forms around the root of the tooth. Pus, which contains dead white blood cells from the body’s immune system in response to infection, builds up. Since it’s in a confined area, the pressure that builds can be extremely painful. When the pus reaches the surface of the gum, it pushes against the tissue and makes a boil. If this condition arises, you should call your dentist immediately. In the meantime, you can rinse your mouth with warm salt water to ease the irritation and bring the boil to a head. Then, it may burst on its own. Once it bursts, the pressure is released and the pain typically subsides. That does not mean the situation does not require attention, however. Infections anywhere in the body should be treated and cleared up, especially in the head.The decay that can lead to a gumboil can begin with only a small spot of demineralization in the tooth’s enamel covering. Demineralization is caused by the interplay of bacteria and food. This is why thorough brushing and flossing every day is important. Those procedures remove the plaque that hosts the bacteria. Visit your dentist regularly for cleaning and checkups and avoid the unpleasantness of gumboils.
