ROOT CANAL THERAPY
Root canal therapy, also called endodontic therapy is a procedure performed on the soft, internal part of the tooth called the pulp, when that part has been affected by trauma like tooth decay or a fracture. The pulp is the part of the tooth that has feeling and when trauma affects it, it becomes inflamed and then eventually becomes infected. The results are pain and swelling.
Removal of the affected pulp and replacing it with root canal filling material alleviates the pain, removes the infection and allows the tooth to feel comfortable again. Because teeth that require root canal therapy are generally also weak from large fillings, decay and fractures, once root canal therapy is completed, it is generally recommended to protect the tooth with a crown in order to make it strong enough to chew food on it.
